Art Choices: How to Find the Perfect Piece for Your Home

Choosing artwork for your home can feel a bit like navigating a labyrinth – so many styles, sizes, and mediums to consider. But don't worry, it doesn't have to be overwhelming. With a little guidance, you'll soon be confidently curating your own personal gallery.

Reflect Your Style:

The most important factor is to choose art that resonates with you. It should reflect your personality, taste, and the overall aesthetic of your home. Whether you're drawn to modern abstracts, classic landscapes, vintage prints, or bold photography, let your preferences guide you.

Consider Your Space:

Before you start shopping, take a good look at the room you have in mind. What's the size of the wall where the art will hang? What are the existing colors and textures in the room? A large-scale piece might dominate a small room, while a tiny artwork might get lost on a vast expanse of wall. Consider the colors and textures in the room to ensure the artwork complements its surroundings.

Embrace Variety:

There's no rule that says all the art in your home has to match perfectly. In fact, a mix of styles and mediums can add depth and visual interest to your space. Pair a contemporary painting with a vintage photograph, or combine different types of art, like sculptures and wall hangings, to create a layered look.

Quality Over Quantity:

It's generally better to invest in a few high-quality pieces that you truly love rather than filling your walls with cheap, mass-produced prints. Original artwork, limited edition prints, or even well-crafted reproductions can elevate your space and bring you years of enjoyment.

Trust Your Instincts:

When you come across a piece of art that sparks joy or makes you feel something, that's a good sign. Trust your gut feeling and don't be afraid to take a chance on something a little unexpected. Art is meant to evoke emotion, so if it speaks to you, it's worth considering.

Pulling it all Together

Consider making a moodboard to pull it all together. Include images of your space, your desired artwork and other inspirational images that support your colour palette. Take a step back, see it all come together, and see if it feels right.

You can use my personal moodboard template via Canva here for free. Just upload your own images, and drag and drop into the spaces provided.
